Round Island Lighthouse shines in Lake Huron

Susan’s Journey

If a picture says a thousand words then this photo of Round Island Lighthouse in Lake Huron sums up my view of life.  The distance is foggy but the lighthouse shines like a beacon of brightness in the center of blue waters whipping up by the early winds of an incoming storm.  Life includes both blue skies and stormy weather.  With gratitude for everything, ALL IS JOY.

I was born and raised in Michigan, but though my heart still cries out for her, I have not lived there since the early 1980s.  Displaced by the restless desires of youth and the circumstances of life, I have lived and traveled throughout the world. These wanderings have shaved away my parochial view of the world and the people within it.  I have learned tolerance, acceptance and forgiveness. The education was often painful yet always joyful.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says “Give thanks in all circumstances”.  Philippians 4:4 says “Rejoice in the Lord always”.  Together, these two verses have formed who I am.  I learned to take the bad with the good and to rejoice always in it all, trusting that there is a purpose.  I’m usually clueless about the purpose though and often recalcitrant.  Perhaps we mellow with age just because we are too tired to keep fighting!

I have been blessed with four children of my own, now all grown, and three more from my second husband who is the love of my life.  Together we have 10 grandchildren, one now deceased, and the number regularly increasing. Normally, there is also a dog. There’s always a dog.  But, recently, my ancient light-hearted and sweet Cocker Spaniel passed. Some day another dog will find its way to us.

I started my career with 20 years of intermittent freelance writing.  It’s so easy to write about someone or something else!  Twenty-two years as a military spouse and stay-at-home mom who moved all the time gave me great scope for reinvention.  I have been a substitute teacher, secretary,  home-school mom, group fitness coordinator,  rowing coach and certified First Aid instructor.  For 18 years I worked in fitness as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist — a fancy name for a well educated personal trainer.  Often I’ve done several at the same time! Most recently, I just closed my Travel Agency.

Once I was at a conference where they asked if anyone could explain the importance of maintaining a calendar.  I laughed and answered, “I’m a single mother of four teens with five part time jobs, 35 regular clients and 18 teens whom I coach.” Now that’s a calendar!!!

I have a BA in Journalism and an MA in Spirituality which I took at the University of Southampton in England.  I lived in Salisbury at the time and my college was located in Winchester.

You will see England and the entire UK pop up as often as possible in my mystery stories.  As a travel agent I specialized in the UK and Ireland and I return to visit friends and family as often as possible.  You will also see France and Europe,  as I’ve very dear English friends living there.  And who knows, maybe you, my readers, will suggest all sorts of exotic and exciting places (like Milwaukee ???) which will turn up in future stories.
